DEAR US,

WE THOUGHT WE KNEW.

BUT WE DIDN’T.

YES, WE WERE ALWAYS DISGUSTED BY RACIST ACTS OF VIOLENCE AND INJUSTICE.

BUT WHAT DID WE DO TO CHANGE IT?

YES, WE LOVE AND RESPECT THE BLACK PEOPLE IN OUR LIVES.

BUT HAVE WE CHECKED IN ON THEM WHEN WE’RE NOT FEELING GUILTY?

AND YES, CLEARLY, OBVIOUSLY, WE DISAGREED WITH OUR UNCLE’S AWFUL VIEWS AND OUR CO-WORKER’S USE OF LANGUAGE.

BUT WHAT DID WE SAY? NOTHING.

WE JUST LEFT THE ROOM.

WHAT WE KNEW ALL ALONG, WAS HOW TO MAKE OURSELVES FEEL COMFORTABLE.

WELL, IT’S TIME TO GET UNCOMFORTABLE.

TIME TO SAY WHAT WE HAVEN’T SAID AND ASK QUESTIONS WE HAVEN’T ASKED.

TIME TO STOP BELIEVING THAT SOMEONE ELSE IS GOING TO FIX THINGS.

THEY WON’T.

IT’S TIME TO MAKE BEING AN ALLY MEAN SOMETHING.

IT’S ON US TO TAKE ACTION.

THAT’S WHAT WE KNOW.
